LOVE HATE RELATIONSHIP WITH COLOUR

Updated: Aug 30, 2020

Colours are wonderful and yet we are either afraid to use them or just simply uncertain how to use them, so we just ditch them and stick to neutrals

I loved colour when I was a little girl and somehow along the way as I was growing up I lost interest, in fact I've got to a point where everything was just black and white and I didn't even want to know about colours. Do we all go through this stage or is it just me?

“What do you mean there are too many colours in it? It's all colours of nature you should be wearing it!” - and gave me the look like something is seriously wrong with me

Me and my friends love city breaks for our birthdays - we've stopped buying fridge magnets and all the knickknacks but since it was my birthday I wanted to take something back with me. I love scarves so I've stopped and looked for one... Probably no surprise but I just couldn't find one that was monochrome. I just really wanted a grey scarf, why is that so hard to find? And why is it that I really liked those colourful scarves and yet I really needed a grey one?

" Is this ok?" - says the man at the shop shaking his head, handing me a white and grey with a very subtle touch of pink scarf.

"Yes, this will be perfect, thank you!" - and I love this scarf today as much as I did then.

Why do we love colour and yet so afraid of them?

We all love a colour and we tend to have one that we just really can't see using, be that in our home or wearing them. I was very much a black and white person and really, when I want to wear a colour, that's probably 99% of the time is got to be blue... and I look at people wearing pink and yellow and orange and think to myself: I wish I could be like them! There is a whole science behind colours and I've recently just finished " The Little Book of Colour" by Karen Haller and I'm telling you, if you are struggling and have a little bit of Love-Hate relationship with all the magical colours of the world like I did, this book will definitely change your view... or at least you will now understand why don't I like pink and you love it.

So just as an example, reading this book, I now know why I needed a grey scarf and why was that grey white and pink so perfect for me back then. Well, we were in the process of buying a house, we just pulled out of one sale and decided on the second one, we were going through all the mortgage advisor and solicitor, and credit scores and estate agents all things new and exciting but very stressful and to top it off, a rat has appeared in our bathroom before I left for my holiday! You see the colour grey can represent the unconscious, it's a safety net and according to this book it helps us quieten the emotional noise in our lives and we can feel comforted by it's presence! I'm sure most of us knew about how clean and fresh white is but I'm sure many don't know that pink is nurturing and caring and it's basically a hug! I can now see how these colours together with their joint effort helped me calm down and just enjoy my city-break! Here are some photos, if you haven't made it to #Granada yet, make sure it's on your bucket list:

So is it wrong that most of us are afraid to use colour? I think so! I mean you need to wear this coloured suit to be taken seriously or that coloured top to appear like a fun outgoing person and when it comes to decorating your house, make sure you stay neutral to please everyone. Really? Well, there is something about these rules and I will elaborate in my next post, but in my experience, as a general rule, if it looks and feels good, it really is good. So don't be fooled.
