Who doesn't love re-purposing things or a good DIY giving items a new life? Probably a lot of people, but you guys here, reading this... you love it all!

Welcome back! I'm sure you are eager to find out what we've done with this chair. Zoe has painted it and I've been experimenting (again) with decoupage. It's been a fun day!

"I've got a job for you, how are your skills at decoupage?"

I've only ever tried decoupage on some ceramic mugs that my mum wanted to throw out, about I don't know 16 years ago 😱. They were just plain cream mugs, and since they were destined to be thrown out I thought I will use some paper napkin to try out decoupage. Nothing fancy, but my mum loved them so much, she decided to keep them and still has them and uses them, so don't underestimate the power of a napkin and a bit of glue! Apparently they can make wonders 🤫

What we call a good upcycling project

As you've seen Zoe and Martin have gone from the light neutral house to a very colourful one, and I recommend bringing in colour to the home every time possible. The only time I say neutral is better, if you are staging your home for sale at which point, your house is not your home anymore, it just becomes a house that you are trying to sell for the best possible price.

And on that note, Zoe got very excited and we've been going through lots of different options, picked out the colours they loved and we are definitely making a statement.

Zoe has done the hard work, sanded and painted a chair so we can experiment with this first one that she will be using in her office. As they both love riding their bikes, we've picked a couple of magazines and books with different paper quality, to see what effect are we getting. You can obviously cut things out, or just rip out like we did. This book had some amazing photos and vintage adverts, so once we've tested the paper we've decided that this is a book that needs saving for the 4 kitchen chairs that are waiting to be upcycled.

To try out our paper options, I've just turned the chair upside down and started gluing them all down. Again, you can use paper napkins, wrapping paper, newspapers, magazines or books to explore the different effects; The thinnest the paper, the harder to handle as it can rip really easily and it wrinkles up quickly, so if you are after a smooth finish, you will need something to smooth it out, but the wrinkled look can be very effective too.

You can stain your paper with tea or coffee, or you can burn the edges of the paper too. The sky is the limit. Here, I've got a Christmas book and basically, ripped out every single chapter that just stated how many days until Christmas and I've created the "Christmas Chair". All I did, was putting a bit of glue on the chair, place the paper on top and then seal the top of the paper with a bit more glue. A little goes a long way! We've had a great laugh, noone will be looking at the bottom of the chair, so I was allowed to do whatever I wanted.

And here's the finished product. All you need is a cheesy old book that you can sacrifice, a small brush or sponge and some Mod Podge (this is seriously good stuff, and there are options for matte or gloss, glitter, outdoors, fabric and even dishwasher safe). We've used the matte version cause, well... we like matte and Zoe has no plans on sticking this into the dishwasher :) You can cover the whole base, but we've quite liked to see the paint coming through between the edges of the paper, so I've just left a bit of gap rather than overlapping all the pieces. And there you have it. Easy, simple DIY to bring some colour in to your space.

I hope you've enjoyed reading about this little project and got some ideas to try in your home. Don't forget, if you need any help, check out my website, I'm only a message away!

Until next time,

Piri
